Protect Your Credit

ID Theft Prevention

Protect Yourself

ID theft can happen to anyone, at any time. These resources can help you if your identity is stolen or if you wish to learn more, so it's less likely to happen to you. As always, your credit union offers free support and assistance.

Young people, under the age of 25, are the fastest-growing segment of the U.S. population to have their identity stolen. Encourage the young people in your life to review their credit report for free.

Warning: Not all ID Theft sites on the web are safe. Some are designed to intentionally scam you.

ID Theft Response: What to do now?

Right Away

Step 1: Call the companies where you know fraud occurred.

  • Explain the situation

  • Ask them to close or freeze your accounts

  • Change logins, passwords, and PINs

Step 2: Place a fraud alert.

Step 3: Get Your Credit Reports.

  • Go to annualcreditreport.com for your free credit reports

  • Review your reports and make note of any accounts or transactions you don’t recognize

Step 4: Report identity theft to the FTC.

Step 5: You may choose to file a report with your local police department.

  • Go to your local police office with:

    • A copy of the FTC report

    • Your ID

    • Proof of your address

    • Proof you have of the theft

  • Tell the police that someone stole your identity and you need to file a report

  • Ask for a copy of the police report
